தனித் தீவு 

"இந்த கப்பலின் என்ஜின் பழுது, நங்கூரமும் கிடையாது "வண்டலை கடந்து எங்கள் ஓட்டைபடகில் அந்தத் தீவை அடைந்த நேரம் அவர் பேசத் தொடங்கியிருந்தார்.

"உங்களை யார் இந்தத் தீவிற்கு  ஓட்டை படகில் வரச் சொன்னது,  திரும்பி செல்வது சிரமம்"  என்றார் என்னிடம்.

தீவில் உள்ளவர்களின் கைகளில் மின்னியபடியே இருக்கும் ஏதோ ஒரு பொருள் இருந்தது, தீவிரமான முகத்துடன் அவர் கூறினார்

"ஓட்டை படகிலிருந்து நீரை இறைக்க  மின்னும் இந்த சின்னஞ்சிறு குடுவைகள் போதுமா என்று தெரியவில்லை" 

திடீர் பரவசத்துடன் என் கையில் ஒரு மின்னும் குடுவையை கையளித்து அவர் கூறினார் "வெகு காலம் முயன்றால் இப்பணியினை முடித்துவிடலாம் "

நீரை இறைக்கையில் எனக்கு சட்டென புரிந்தது, அவர் தனது ஓட்டை படகை, கப்பல் என்று,  இத்தனைக் காலம் கருதி வந்தது.  கேட்கலாம் என்று நினைக்கையில், அவர் கிழிந்த தன் வரலாற்று பக்கங்களை, மின்னும் குடுவையில் இருந்த திரவம் கொண்டு, ஒட்ட வைக்க முயன்று கொண்டிருந்தார்.  நான் பார்த்தவுடன் பக்கங்களை சுருட்டி கொண்டு வந்திருந்த பையில் திணித்து எவ்வளவு கவனமாக இருந்தாலும் பக்கங்கள் இப்படி கிழிந்து விடுகின்றன என்றார்.

அவர்  "தனிமையை மின்னும் குடுவையில் வைத்து இறைப்பது"  ஒரு கலை என்றும்  வெகு காலம் இத்தீவில் இதற்கான பயிற்சி நடைபெற்று வருகிறது என்றும் பயிற்சி காலத்தை உபயோகமாக கழிக்கும்படியும் எனக்கு அறிவுரை வழங்கினார். 

"இறைக்கும் நீரில் ஏன் சார் இத்தனை வேறுபாடு ..மின்னும் குடுவைகளில் ஏன் இத்தனை நிறங்கள்? " என்று நான் கேட்டேன் 

"நீரிலும் இரத்தத்திலும் கண்ணீரிலும் வியர்வையிலும்  தனிமையிலும்  வேறுபாடு கிடையாது என்று கூறி மின்னும் குடுவை முனை கொண்டு இருவர் கைகளிலும் கீறினார். வெளி வரும் தனிமையின் நீரை பருகும்படி கோபமாக கட்டளை இட்டார்

சிறிது இளகி  வேறுபாடு உண்டு என்றும் நீ தான் வேறுபாட்டை தாண்ட வேண்டும் என்றும்  இறைஞ்சி கண்ணீர் உகுத்தார். சிறிது கண்ணீரை விண்டு எனக்கு அளித்து  சிறிது கரித்தாலும் இந்த தீவில் கண்ணீரின் சுவை அபாரமாக இருக்கும் என்றார்.

தீவில் இல்லாதவர்கள் குறித்த முறைப்பாடு தேவையற்றது என்று கூறிய அதே தருணத்தில் தனது காதலியின் முகம் நினைவுக்கு வருவதாக கூறி என் கன்னத்தில் எச்சில் நிறைந்த அற்புத முத்தம் ஒன்றை வைத்து " இந்த ஒட்டு மொத்த தீவிற்கான முத்தம்" என்றார்.

ஓட்டை படகின் மின்னும் குடுவைகள் நிரம்பியபடி இருந்தன.

தீவில் இருந்தவன் கேட்ட பழைய முடிவுரை 

"நீரின்றி அமையாது உலகு 

ய ஏ॒வம் வேத॑

யோ॑பாமா॒யத॑னம்॒ வேத॑

ஆ॒யத॑னவான் பவதி".

 

விஷ்ணு வந்தார்

விஷ்ணு வந்தார் சிறுகதை தொகுப்பு வாசித்து முடித்தேன். ஏற்கனவே தனித்தனியாக அனைத்து கதைகளையும், விஷ்ணு வந்தார் , ஒத்திசைவு கதைகளை தவிர மீதி கதைகளை வாசித்து இருந்தேன். நேற்று மொத்த தொகுதியையும் ஒரு சேர வாசித்தேன். கதைகள் மிகவும் நன்று.

பெரும்பாலான கதைகளின் முடிவில் அமைதி கூடி வருவதாகவே உணர்ந்தேன். ஒருவர் பிறந்த பின் இந்த வாழ்வை கடக்க, ஆற்றுப்படுத்த, நுண்மையாக உணர, அனுபவங்களின் போதாமையை நிரப்ப, முன்னோர் காட்டும் வழி முக்கியமானதாக இருக்கிறது. 

முன்னோர் கையளித்த சடங்குகள், அவர்கள் விட்டு சென்ற கதைகள், அவர் தம் அறிவியல், முன்னோரின் தெளிந்த வாழ்வியல் தேர்வுகள் இவற்றை ஒன்றோடு ஒன்று பிணைத்து நாம் இயற்கையை, நமது வாழ்வை புரிந்து கொள்கிறோம். அனைத்து வாசல்களையும் திறந்து அறிபவனுக்கு இயற்கை என்றும் ஒரு முடிவிலா ஆச்சரியம் தான். அறிதல் சட்டகங்கள் பல, பல்லுயிர் நோக்கி அறிய, வெளியும் கடலும் அறிய, நம் உடலை அறிய, எண்ணங்களை அறிய, உறவுகளை அறிய எத்தனை எத்தனை வழிகள்.

கதைகள் பெரும்பாலும் ஆசிரியரின் தேடல் பயணத்தின் ஆக்கங்கள், அவர் தேடிப் பெற்றவை,  அவற்றை சற்றே விண்டு வாசகனுக்கு அளித்திருக்கும் முயற்சி, இன்னும் கொஞ்சம் மௌடிகம், குறைவான சொற்கள், கதைகளின் கலைத் தன்மையை புதிர் தன்மையை கூட்டியிருக்கும். ஆனால் மேலதிக சொற்களே இக்கதைகளை நெருங்கி வர உதவியது. 

விஷ்ணு வந்தார் கதையில் பித்ரு ஸ்தானத்தில் உள்ளவரை பித்ருவாகவே  கண்டு  சொன்னது,   நீர்பதுமராகம் கதையில் பூச்சிகள் தாவரங்கள் வரலாற்று குறித்த தகவல்களை ஆசிரியரின் தேர்வு வழி பிணைத்து  இயற்கையின் சமனை குறிப்பதன் மூலம்,அது நீ குறிக்கும் Suffering ன் நீக்க முடியாத தன்மை பற்றிய பகுதி,எண்ணங்களை  எண்ணும்  அலகை சாமியார் உணர்த்தும் இடங்கள் - நவம் - இவ்வாறு பொதுவில் அறிவியல் வழி அறியும் இடங்களை நம் சடங்குகளும் கதைகளும் தொடும், இணையும், ஒன்றை ஒன்று நிரப்பும் இடங்களை கொண்ட கதைகள் இவை.

உணவிற்கு உள்ளது போல் சொற்களுக்கும் வயிறு உள்ளது இல்லையா - மேலும் மேலும் என்று கேட்டுக்கொண்டே இருக்கும் தன்மையிலான வயிறு. நல்ல எழுத்தாளர்கள் அளிக்கும் செறிவான உணவை உண்பதற்கு வாசகர் சார்பிலும் தேடலும் சிறிது மௌனமும் அவசியம்.

யதார்த்தத்தின் மறுகூறல் - கதைகள் அனைத்திலுமே பெரும்பாலும் நாம் காணும் புற உலகு அத்தனை உயிர்ப்புடன் பதிவாகியிருக்கிறது. இத்தனை புறவயமாக இருந்தும் அத்தனை உணர்வுபூர்வமாக இருக்கிறது. அகமும் புறமும் நெருங்கி குழைந்து விட்டது. கதை மாந்தர்களின் உடல் தோற்ற விவரிப்பில் தொடங்கி வீடு வெளி தினசரி அலுவல்கள் அத்தனை உயிர்ப்புடன் உணர்வுகளுடன் விவரிக்க பட்டிருக்கின்றன. இவையே இக்கதைகளின் அடிப்படை கலை.இவற்றின் மேல் கூறப்படும் கதை அமைந்திருக்கிறது. எல்லா நல்ல கதைகளுக்கும் மேல் சொன்னவை பொருந்தும் என்று தோன்றினாலும் கதைகளின் வீச்சு பன்மடங்காவது இத்தனை உயிர்ப்பான யதார்த்தத்தை அது தன்னிடையே கொண்டிருப்பதால் தான். மேலும் இத்தனை உயிர்ப்பான விஷயங்களை நாம் சராசரி வாழ்வில் கண்டு கொள்கிறோமோ என்பதே பெரிய கேள்விக்குறி.

வாழ்விலிருந்து நழுவுதல் - கடைசி நழுவல் மரணமாக இருப்பினும் இக்கதைகளின் நிகழ்வுகள் நனவிலிரிந்தும் சலிப்பான அல்லது தாங்க முடியாத யதார்த்தத்திலிரிந்தும் கனவு வழி நழுவுகிறது. கனவுகளின் இனிமை நல்லது. கனவுகளின் கோரம் அவை உண்மையில் நடக்க வில்லை என்ற ஆசுவாசம் தரவல்லது .பெரு நேரத்தை வாழ்வின் உயிர்ப்பிலும் சிறு நேரம் வாழ்வின் கனவுகளிலும் களிப்பதே சரியான ஒன்றாக இருக்கும்.

மீதமிருக்கும் ஏகாந்தம் - காலமும் இடமும் இது வரை விட்டு வைத்திருக்கும் அல்லது இதற்கு முன் இருந்த ஏகாந்தத்தை நினைவூட்டும் கதைகள் இவை. நம்பவே முடியாத அளவுக்கு கால நிதானத்தையும் அள்ள முடியாத வெளியின் விகாசத்தையும் இந்தக் கதைகள் நமக்கு உரைக்கின்றன. 

நவீன மனதிற்கு, மரணத்திற்கு முன்பாக , உடல் புறம் குறித்த உயிர்ப்பையும் உணர்வையும், கனவின் அழகான நழுவலையும், கால இட ஏகாந்தத்தின் தேவையையும் இந்தக் கதைகள் உணர்த்துகின்றன.

Making Sense of Maria's Mind

Good Novel with possible subtexts to ponder over.

At times it does sounds like a chain of unconnected stories coming one after the others mostly in semi caricaturist fashion.Those Unconnected Stories and plethora of semi caricaturist characters have predominant intention of amusing the reader and go no further.

These stories create a universe as seen by Maria but does not take any direction or do not have an impactful story arc to cherish or ponder over after we have read.Amusing one-liners keeps us engaged, at times writing makes us wonder at the simple explanations of many things, but on the whole, Novel does not create any overall lasting impact. Novel’s impact comes in parts with Independent glimpses of good writing.

Subtexts of Wandering Rural Vs Time Driven Urban, Commune Living in Urban Setup gives us the indicative view of world Maria Troubles.

Novel’s tone set us up for an interesting question of how we separate Desire from Ambition.

Maria’s Character seem to indicate to us on the great joy of desires of many things, but she seem devoid of any ambition.She loves talking to people around, Basks in Memories, longs for tasty food, always moving around but within in specific circle of repetition and worries about separation by death .Though she is devoid of any ambition, there is no indication of inaction, life seem to on the flux driven by desires of many things simpler and smaller.

Ambition as a Career , as Personality, as Good Will, as discipline, as an Economic benefit set against many things simpler and smaller.This Ambition vs Desire Arc makes reading this novel worthwhile.

Read in Tamil, Difficult translation to read (!)

Writing to conflate many parallel readings and reflecting on personal experience.

Meursault, Escaping from Work , seemingly a regular desk regime to earn a living, what shackles and feelings one goes through adjusting to the regime, Through Meursault we start with this initial question and continue following him through out his journey.

In following Meursault, we reflect on How do we reconcile with what we are born around with, Past,Surroundings and Responsibilities ? Should we plan a escape based on some philosophy ? Or without changing much must we face a natural inevitable death ?

Having cut off the past and Surroundings we are left to negotiate with the Family, where inevitably all are apt to be called children, as Meursault calls them. Most beautifully placed home amidst fond children, is it enough for a Man ? 

As fate or freewill would have it Meursault escape again to loneliness to face himself all alone, With economics of simple living taken care, Meursault left with oceans of time to himself without any responsibility, without any additional words to digress, He has to face himself all alone ? Do we aspire to be in Such a situation as Meursault. Meursault still needs company but it does not seem Mandatory.

Having come this far, Meursault faces the Inevitable death with tremendous grace and happiness, He fears disease, for it dampens his freewill, but faces death without any fear or anxiety.

My thoughts waver to many touch points but mainly hover around Escaping, Not opposing the freewilling existence and Religious Introspection.

On Escape, Iam always reminded of Ashokamitran s indicative words that we always escape in the pretext of living. Escape and Freedom are now interchangeable words whose meanings are almost similar yet different.

On Unopposing the burden of existence, wonder if Camus had any connection with JK, JK, A master of words to inculcate a sense of being amongst those who listen or read him.Many passages in this Tamil translation reminded of JK, especially the phases where Meursault comes to term with his own loneliness. 

On Religious Introspection, Camus as we knew cannot be pigeon holed as existential writer alone, for he is surely one, But apart from that, that unbearable pain he feels while reflecting on his loneliness, He opens the door of Introspection for us. From the basic questions on Meaning or Meaninglessness of existence to yearning for a graceful, undisturbing, contented, silent, unconsuming life, we see tremendous similarity in his aforesaid resolve to Vairagya or Sankalpa Part of Religious Introspection.

Having conflated many things similar and dissimilar to relish the text, I wish to read the English Translation of "Happy Death".

Two Lives - Vikram Seth

 

Portrayal of two complete lives with tremendous details , perspectives spanning across the entire twentieth century.

Tracing the lives of Shanti and Henny acting as a mirror of their daily lives, the book unfolds with reflections on many facets of their lives, how they lived, what they liked, what they felt and what they did and what they spoke about.

Book's form is mosaic of many touch points. Author Vikram's direct relationship with his Uncle Shanti and his aunty Henny forms the bedrock. Vikram does a series of Interviews with his Uncle to unfold Shanti's Life while his Aunty Henny s life unfolds through series of letters she wrote and received. Picture gets completed by Shanti's relatives view points , all three masterfully emotionaly woven to the book by the author turning it into a fantastic and humbling read.

Novel offers a precious window to see how a person grows, from the spring of youth to the firmness of the middle to the frailties of the old to the senility of last, a complete view of a life lived with all its highs and lows evened out.

This Novel is Double biography, as the author puts,  throws light of  two persons in exile , both exiled under completely different circumstances, One by choice or chance of fate to other by political developments.

This book helped author to overcome his understandable bitterness on how things turned out, perhaps there in lies a life lesson of able to see things as is with a degree of detachment.

Beauty of well constructed scenes keep you in awe. What we knew already from what we see is the premise of a Hyper Male against an Adamant Female. This Premise is aptly decorated by Family Members's idiosyncrasies and gossips.

Thus a Journey begins for the family, a rally to seek remedy to the current plight with prayers on either sides. Journey across Villages, Forests, barren lands leads us to the final destination. Journey is fillled with curious, inadvertent, stereotypic, touchy obstacles until we reach the finish mark.

A Road movie similar to Madras to Pondicherry done aesthetically. 

Frames, admirable, Rally view from the top, from the sides, from the front, Staccato Shots, Hyper walks, Justapoxing two or three Characters in a single frame, All these frames waiting for the viewer to interpret, leads us to the end of Journey with no apparent indication or suggestion. All these frames above does not in any way indicate the upcoming subtle transformation or about the Open Choice every one has to make in the end. Instead those Frames end up as a Outsider Gaze on a family, seeking remedy to a dispute, Viewed with curiosity and enjoyed with Silly Jest.

Frames though intelligent rarely evoke any emotion or movement within us. Frames does not add up to the overall Philosophy of the film if there was one.

End of Journey, the original Premise still remains nascent without flowering into any depth or Subtext. This left a gasping feeling of incompleteness at the end.

Overwhelming read, Hard not to be over awed by Sammler s urge and tendency to condense the vast disparate lives events and spoken words into few lines of meaningful summarization, After all each one of us try to do the same when confronted with questions of difficult kind while dealing with vagaries of Life.

This Novel condenses the Jewish  American life as a whole into a set of characters, each idiosyncratic in its own way to expound the big picture of falling apart of something existing , What existed earlier seem to be of some value with some hidden rot, flamboyantly replaced now with new set of individualistic maladventures amoralities and indecisiveness leading us into the next generation lives.

In author s own words, As we struggle to summarize, life speed past us at breathtakingly, only to pause at the moments we can remember. This is spectacularly inversed by Man in 20th century. He is trying to create best set of moments, best set of things, best set of choices for himself as an individual leaving anything else worth pursuing as a  secondary choice creating the unintended 'banality of the best' further fuelling discontent.  கதைகளை ஒட்டுமொத்தமாக வாசிக்கையில் மூன்று விஷயங்கள் பெரும்பாலான கதைகளில் அமைந்து வந்துள்ளதாக தோன்றியது, 1) அடிப்படையில் வாழ்வை துய்க்க மகிழ்ச்சி நாட்டம்  2) அடிப்படையில் அனைத்து செயல்களிலும் பொதிந்துள்ள அறம் சார்ந்த ஊடாட்டம் 3) தினப்படி வாழ்வை எளிதாக்கும் பகடியும் எள்ளலும் - இம்மூன்றும் கதைகளை விவரிக்கும் விதத்திலும் கதைகளின் உள்ளடக்கத்திலும் கூடி வந்துள்ளன  - எந்த ஒரு மனிதனின் வாழ்விற்கும்  இம்மூன்றும் அடிப்படையாக இருக்க சாத்தியமான ஒன்று, பகடி தமிழ் நல்லுலகில்  பெரும்பாலும் பிடி மாட்டாது போனாலும் , இம்மூன்றும் ஒரு மனிதனுக்கு அமைகையில் அவன் ஆளுமை குறைந்த பட்சம் சிறப்பானதாக இருக்கும்.

எனக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்த கதைகளாக காலச்சிமிழ், வனம் திரும்புதல், மனைமோகம் இம்மூன்றையும் கூறுவேன்

தனிக்கதைகளையும் அதன் தனிப்பட்ட அழகுகளையும் தாண்டி , நிலங்கீழ்வீடு, Galle Face Hotel, மனைமோகம்,இராணுவத்தில் சித்தார்த்தன், கதைகள்  அதன் வெளிப்படையான உட்பிரதி / உள்ளடக்கம் காரணமாக இணைத்து வாசிக்க வேண்டிய கதைகளாக தோன்றின . இக்கதைகளில் என்னை கவர்ந்தவை   Galle Face Hotel - கதையில் வன்முறை அறவே இல்லாதது, மனை மோகம் கதை ஒரு Existenalist திரைப்படத்தின் உள்ளடக்கத்தை போல் இருந்தது, ஒரு தேர்ந்த இரானிய திரைப்படத்தை பார்த்தது போல் இருந்தது, Leila's Brothers என்ற ஈரானிய திரைப்படத்தை நீங்கள் கண்டிருப்பீர்கள்.

Donner Wetter, தாயுமானவள்,மாயத்தூண்டில்  கதைகளில் நமக்கு ஐரோப்பா அதன் பன்முகங்களில் அறிமுகமாகிறது

ஓடுகாலித் தாத்தா , மேகா அழகிய மனைவி, வடிவான கண்ணுள்ள பெண் , ஜிமிக்கி ஸ்பெஷலிஸ்ட், சோபிதாவிற்கு பெர்லின் காட்டுதல் - ஓடும் நதி - இவ்வாழ்வில் நம்மை நாமே பரிசீலிக்க, புரிந்து கொள்ள, வெகு சில வாய்ப்புகளே அமையும் அவ்வகையான தருணங்களின் உணர்ச்சி நிலைகளை இக்கதைகள் கையாள்கின்றன, சிட்டிகை உப்பு போல் குறைந்தாலும் சிரமம் , இல்லையென்றாலும் சிரமம், உதவி செய்வது பலனை எதிர்பார்த்தா ? பெண்ணின் அழகு ஒருவர் மட்டுமே ரசிக்க வேண்டும் என்கிற விதி எவ்வெல்லை வரை செல்லும் ? ஏமாற்றுபவனே ஏமாறும் போது நம் நிலைப்பாடு என்ன ? சொந்த வாழ்க்கையின் சுகம் முக்கியமா ? சுகம் குறைத்து குடும்பத்தை காப்பாற்றுவது முக்கியமா ? லௌகீக பொறுப்பில்லாமல்  புத்தகம் படிப்பவர் நல்லவரா கெட்டவரா ? - எவற்றிற்கும் எளிதான விடை இல்லை, எள்ளலும் பகடியும் மின்னும் இந்தக்கதைகளில் குறிப்பாக " சோபிதாவிற்கு பெர்லின் காட்டுதல் மற்றும்  மேகா அழகிய மனைவி கதைகளின் வரிகள் வெடித்து சிரிக்க வைத்தன அதே நேரத்தில் சிந்திக்கவும் வைத்தன.

காலச்சிமிழ் மற்றும் வனம் திரும்புதல் இவ்விரண்டு கதைகளின் வடிவங்கள் புதுமை - நன்று. இவை ஒட்டுமொத்த வாழ்வின் தாங்க முடியாத நினைவுகளை சுமந்தபடி அமைந்துள்ள கதைகள், மீண்டும் மீண்டும் எண்ணிப் பார்க்க வைக்கும் வரிகளை கொண்ட காலச்சிமிழ் கதையின் தெளிவு  ஒரு எழுத்தாளனின் வெற்றி என்றால் வனம் திரும்புதல் சீறி அலையும் அத்தனை திசைகளும்  மிக நுட்பமானவை - நகரத்தின் அலைவில் ஒரு நாள் முடிந்து திரும்பும் சித்திரம் எனக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்திருந்தது - ஹீலியம் தயவில் ஒட்டு மொத்த நினைவுகளும் வந்து முகில்களாக சுற்றி சுற்றி வரும் போதும் தெரியும் நகர மின்மினி காடுகளை நான் உணர்ந்திருக்கிறேன்.

ஹீலியம் உபாசனை நன்று, அதை விட நன்று நங்கையர்களின் ஒளிர் விடும் கண்கள், அதை விட நன்று அறிந்திராதவர் அளிக்கும் அணுக்கம் , அதை விட நன்று இந்த ஆசைகள் நினைவுகள் அனைத்தும் நகுலன் கூறியது போல்  ஒரு புள்ளியாய் தோன்றும் வனம் திரும்பும் நாட்கள்.
